As per usual Nikon Ed lenses are so good. This is my first small telephoto lense. I took it surface with my Nikon Digital D70s. The pictures were Wow. The light weight made focus without vibration or tripod simple. It was silent too, so when I went for a second shot on a butterfly it wasn't the least disturbed.
Five out of 5 great shots.

    The 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 OS is equipped with Sigma’s own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) technology.  This system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake.  It also automatically detects panning movement of the camera and compensate for camera shake when shooting moving subjects such as motor sports.
  • Excellent Optical Performance
    A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and three aspherical glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.  The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting while producing the best color balance.
  • Enables close-up photography 
    This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm through entire zoom range with a maximum magnification of 1:3.9 making it very convenient for taking close-up pictures.

The Sigma 18-200mm high-zoom-ratio lens is designed exclusively for Canon digital SLR cameras and is capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths, from wide-angle to telephoto. Two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and two hybrid aspherical lenses correct for all types of aberrations, letting Sigma house the extended-range super-zoom lens in a compact and lightweight body that measures 70mm in diameter and 78.1mm long and weighs a mere 14.3 ounces. The new lens coating, meanwhile, reduces flare and ghost--a common problem shared by many digital cameras--while also creating an optimum color balance. Other details include a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7) at all focal lengths, a high zoom ratio of 11:1, and a maximum magnification of 1:4.4.

Sigma got it right : Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC AF OS (Optical Stabilizer) Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras
I bought this lens about a month ago and it has not come off my camera since. The Os function works wonders and I love the range. I have gotten total use of both wide angle and telefoto focal lengths and it hasn't disappointed at either range. I have taken this lens colse to Se Asia and the colors that come out when shooting in sunlight was much best than I originally expected. I've even taken some nice portrait shots with this.
My one annoyance would be the loud autofocus but you get used to it and I haven't been shooting in conditions where absolute silence was needed, such as a ceremony.
This lens came out for canon bodies since at this price point canon doesn't have something that rivals the Nikon 18-200mm Vr.
My voyage lens kit now consists of:
1. Sigma 18-200mm Os
2. Canon 100mm 2.8 Usm Macro
3. Canon 50mm 1.8 (better for lowlight)

If I'm not taking macro shots specifically, the Sigma is on my camera 99% of time during the day. I truly feel that it is the best value you can get for a Canon body in terms of a walk-around lens at this price point.

Typically the kit lens on an Slr is something along the lines of "You wanted a piece of glass, you got a piece of glass."

Certainly handling the lens doesn't inspire confidence, as it's mostly plastic, and feels flimsy. Many population often put down plastic lenses as they're supposedly to liable to break, but the ones saying that are often veterans from the film era when camera bodies were metal and simple. I'd say if you've dropped your digital Slr hard sufficient to break a plastic lens, you've probably broken a few other things as well.

What the 18-55 does offer is a 3X zoom, silent wave motor focusing, and widely spaced zoom settings, with only moderate distortion. It's not until you've used some other zoom lenses, where at the wide angle all turns in a barreled funhouse, or the zoom settings are something like 28-35-50------135---200 that you appreciate how well this lens is concept out.

The only odd thing about the lens is it extends and then retracts through the zoom cycle. The silent wave motor is quick and fast, and results have consistently been sharp.

While it's "only" a 3X zoom, it gets around the compromises in distortion that full distance zooms have. Pair this with the 55-200mm Vr and you'll have 90 percent of your photo needs covered.

Probably the ideal affordable compromise between range and capability : Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Of the dozen or so Nikon lenses I've owned, this is the first I've been unhappy with. Features vs. Price isn't a problem, but capability of materials has turned out to be a huge issue. To save money or weight (or both) Nikon has used thin, cheap plastic instead of metal for the bayonet mount. I didn't observation just how thin and brittle this plastic was until shooting in 28 degree weather last month, when the lens absolutely fell off the camera body as I was zoomed in on a subject.

Inside the body I found a tiny shard of black plastic that turned out to be all that ever held the lens on the body. Comparing the shard to the remainder that had Not broken off the lens, I was shocked to see just how thin this very leading of plastic had been on the day the lens left the facility -- what I mean is, I wasn't seeing at a mount worn thin by repeated use: this was traditional material and workmanship with no signs of abuse or wear in the 10 months since I'd purchased it new.

The lens is on its way to Nikon heal now but the only thing I fear more than them Not fixing it for free is that they'll replace it with someone else poorly-made lens that's going to fall apart on me in the middle of an leading shoot. I don't "baby" my equipment but I do take care of it and I expect it to last for years as a result. This used to be what Nikon stood for and I'm still using Nikon lenses purchased over 20 year ago. Corners were obviously cut to yield this lens cheaply and in seeing at how it's made, I'm not surprised it fell off the camera body and into a snow bank while general use. This lens does Not relate a commitment to quality. Unless you plan on never removing it from the camera body, I would look elsewhere...
